Name: Crop forecasting for wine grapes
Description: A workshop to assist growers to reliably and objectively measure wine grape crop yields.
Cost: This course is costed at $328, but after subsidies provided by the NSW Government, NSW producers pay only $295.
Course aims: To improve the ability of vineyard managers and technical staff to forecast wine grape crop yields.
Learning outcomes:
  • Explain the principles of crop forecasting
  • Survey vineyard blocks
  • Produce a forecast from bunch counts using software
  • Develop a forecast from berry counts using software
  • Count and sample bunches near harvest
  • Produce a forecast from harvest sample data using software
  • Develop a forecast from segment picking data using software
Length: Four days
Course program/structure: Day 1
  • Introduction
  • Principles of crop forecasting
  • Surveying vineyard blocks
  • Producing a forecast from bunch counts

Day 2

  • Producing a forecast from berry counts
  • Producing a forecast from bunch weights

Day 3

  • Counting and sampling bunches near harvest
  • Producing a forecast from harvest sample data
  • Producing a forecast from segment picking data

Day 4

  • How to evaluate system performance
  • How to evaluate sources of inaccuracy
  • Facilitated discussion and evaluation
Resources and method of delivery: Participants receive a course manual and CD with forecasting software.

This course is delivered using indoor and outdoor instruction.

Accreditation: This is an industry-based non accredited course.

This course was developed by the CSIRO and the Victorian Department of Natural Resources and Environment with funding from the Grape and Wine Research Development Corporation.
