Name: Integrated Pest Management in viticulture - Research to Practice®
Description: A workshop to assist wine grape growers develop a plan for the management of target pests.
Cost: After NSW Government subsidy, $265 GST-free
Course aims: To develop a strategic plan for the management of target pests. This includes identifying land management and production objectives, legal requirements, pest control methods, and estimating the costs and advantages of management options.
Learning outcomes:
  • Assess pest and land management information
  • Determine production objectives
  • Estimate the costs and advantages of control options
  • Select appropriate management options for pests and discuss these with stakeholders
  • Identify the legal requirements relating to pest control
  • Identify target pests and understand their biology
  • Demonstrate awareness of environmental and social issues relating to land use
  • Develop a strategic plan for the management of target pests
Length: Two and a half days

  • Introduction
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
  • Important pests
  • Monitoring and treatment thresholds
  • Biological control
  • Cultural control
  • Principles of chemical control

Day 2

  • Pest by pest IPM
  • Light brown apple moth
  • Mites
  • Powdery mildew
  • Downey mildew
  • Vineyard session

Day 3

  • Review vineyard plans
  • Presentation of IPM case studies
Resources and method of delivery: Participants receive a course manual.

This course is delivered using indoor and outdoor instruction.

Accreditation: This course is mapped to the national unit of competency, RTD5402A - Develop a strategy for the management of target pests.

This course was developed by the Grape and Wine Research Development Corporation.
