Name: Stock Safe - safe responsible livestock handling
Description: This course aims to improve safe handling skills of stock on farm and reduce the risk of injury of those working with livestock, and to raise awareness of animal welfare as an issue of public concern.
Cost: After NSW Government subsidy, $245 GST-free.
Includes manual and workbook.
Course aims:
  • To improve the handling skills of those working with livestock

Learning outcomes:
  • Identify and assess risks to occupational health and safety in cattle handling work
  • Determine actions and work practices that minimise risks in cattle handling work
  • Identify cattle welfare issues and promote cattle health and wellbeing
  • Effectively move, draft and control livestock using basic methods
  • Identify handling practices that affect carcase quality
  • Identify some factors that affect meat quality

  • Animal welfare
  • Animal behaviour
  • The impact of poor handling on meat quality
Resources and method of delivery: Participants will receive a course manual and four Agfacts.

This practical workshop is delivered using a mixture of both indoor and outdoor based instruction. Yard and paddock demonstrations are followed by hands on exercises including moving and handling cattle and sheep in yards and in the paddock.

Accreditation: This course is mapped to the national unit of competency, RTE4913A - Analyse and interpret production data.
